Kathy Watt Cycling - Mountain Training Camp at Bright 7-10th March, 2008
A base level of fitness will be required as each day we will conquer one of the 3 main mountain peaks in the area-Falls Creek, Mount Hotham & Mount Buffalo. Support vans will be provided to follow the various groups and provide mechanical assistance, food, water,etc. Each day a full continental breakfast will be provided before we set out on the group rides. This will be followed by Barbeque Lunches and a chance to socialise & get to know the other cyclists better. Each afternoon will consist of lectures from which all participants will hear some interesting stories and learn things they can take away to improve their own cycling. There will be video presentations and some information that each participant can take home to help them go faster by choosing the most appropriate equipment to optimise performance that is the best value for money.

Kathy Watt
Kathy Watt created cycling history when she won the first gold medal for Australia in the 1992 Barcelona Olympic road race. Then a few days later she won Silver on the track in the 3km Individual Pursuit becoming the first and only Australian to win medals for Australia on both road and track at an Olympics. She won Bronze in the 1995 World Time Trial Championships as well as medals of every colour at Commonwealth Games (4 Gold,1 Silver &1 Bronze) and Oceania Championships (5 Gold,Silver & Bronze). She has held Leaders Jersey in Tour of Italy for 7/9days finishing 2nd on GC (1994) and 3rd GC and winning Points Jersey(1990) as well as finishing 7th at Tour de France feminine (GC) and winning International World Cups,Tours and 1 day Races. She currently is in her 3rd season with Professional Womens Cycling team Lotto Belisol which is based in Belgium. Kathy will talk about winning the Olympics, International racing and pass on some valuable tips and knowledge for the riders attending the camp.
Lachlan Thompson
*Associate Professor in Aerospace Engineering at RMIT University
*Inventor of the Superbike and wide arrange of equipment used by the Australian Team at the Olympics (helmets,disc Wheels, handlebars,forks,etc).
*Involved in scientific experiments on the Space Shuttle with Spacehab and other projects for NASA.
The theme for his talk will be "How to go Faster without Really Trying." He will talk about the importance of choosing equipment,bike material and tyres to optimize performance. Also he will discuss which equipment is the best value for money comparatively to help you go faster and to fit within your budget. Lachlan will use his extensive knowledge of windtunnel testing to talk about the importance of rider positioning and how if optimized it can cut aerodynamic drag and hence produce faster times. Lachlan helped Kathy and the Australian Olympic team before the 1992 Olympics to optimize performance. Some popular myths will be discussed(ie when to use light weight vs aerodynamic frames, and the importance of stiffness in frames and wheels,etc). Each rider will be given useful information to take home for future reference.
Peter Fitzgerald
*1976 Olympian - Semi Finalist 200m and Australian 200m Champion 1975 & 76. He was Australian 200m Record Holder 20.5secs.
*Currently in his role as Chairman of Selectors for Australian Triathlon and Athletics he has visited Beijing
*He specialises in Sports Law and is a keen cyclist and triathlete. He will discuss the change in High Performance Sport preparation from the past to current day in the way athlete preparations for Beijing Olympics. Also what conditions the athletes and spectators can expect to find in Beijing-Facilities, Evironmental factors, pollution,food,traffic,etc.
Carey Hall
*Head Coach at Kathy Watt Cycling
*Australian Sprint Champion
*Represented Australia on Track and Road. Competed in International Keirin racing in Japan and international World cups. Carey will discuss cycling skills , training, sprinting, bunch positioning and race tactics.
