After qualifying with the fastest time, Russell Poole showed excellent
form demonstrating the skill of a veteran track sprinter to win the Le
Tour Cycles Roller Derby competition. Russell followed through in each
of his rounds to beat all opposition soundly.
Alan Barnes had a lucky draw to sneak through and finish second. Alan qualified in the middle of the field and after losing his first round match to John Lewis won the ride off between the fastest losers (against Duanne Gilmore) by just a flick of the needle to gain a spot in the finals. Road Club Champion Steve Martin had qualified with the second fastest time but still recovering from his recent accident failed to repeat his initial performance. With Alan borrowing a rear wheel (changing from a 91.8 to 98.4, thank you Rowan) Alan narrowly beat Steve to get into the final ride off for gold against Russell.
Third place went to the typically cocky showman Barry Woods with fourth place to Steve Martin after a cat and mouse, light hearted ride off between the two.
My respects go to Sally Robins the being the only women to front up and have a go, and also to a very new member of the club who had never ridden on rollers and has yet to ride a track season - Martin Placek.
Many thanks to Le Tour Cycles for their sponsorship of the night, for those that were a part of the competition, turned up to watch/encourage/laugh and to Jamie Goddard and all those who helped to make the night happen.
