Race Staff Position Descriptions
Lead Car Drivers
Purpose: To warn other road users and race officials that the riders are approaching.
Arrival Time
Please ensure you arrive at least 1 1/2 hours prior to the published
race start time. If by unforseen circumstances you are running
late please phone ahead to the Race Director to let them know.
Please also ensure that you have adequate fuel to drive the distance of the race!
Equipment required
Magnetic roof sign, rear window sign, revolving warning amber light
and car CB/hand held radio.
Before the start
- Check in and collect folder.
- Attend Follow car driver’s briefing.
- Collect the equipment you require.
- Check the radio is operating (the channel needs to be set).
Call Sign
If you have a radio please use the name on your folder as your call sign:
eg. LEAD CAR, CAR B, CM 1 etc.
During the event
- Turn on your headlights and revolving flashing light for the duration of the race.
- Keep 200-300m ahead of the bunch.
- Be aware of rider's speed down hills. They may be travelling faster than you.
- Increase the gap between you and the riders before corners and steep descents.
- Try making contact with corner marshals a couple of km’s out from their corners to notify arrival of cyclist’s.
- When approaching the finish (400-500m) and it looks like a bunch sprint. Move to the centre of the road to persuade cars not to pass the riders. You may have to put your hand out the window and give them the stop signal.
After the race
- Return your folder and radio to the designated person
- Return the revolving light, roof and rear window signs to the designated person.
- Complete your post race task that is on the schedule sheet.
- Attend the debriefing
Notify the Race Director before you leave.
